Fayetteville Soccer Club: Challenge

The Fayetteville Soccer Club offers a well rounded experience in competitive soccer for boys and girls.  The Challenge soccer League is to provide an environment in which the level of competition, commitment, and player development falls between that of Recreation and Classic Leagues.  The Challenge division is open to players 11 to 14 years old.  Challenge teams compete against other Challenge teams from the leagues and clubs associated with the North Carolina Mid-State Soccer League (MSSL).  The Challenge program allows for players developing beyond the Recreational level to play at a more competitive level with modified travel time to and from games.

Competitive Tryouts
By USYS and USSF standards, the NCYSA Challenge program is a competitive level of play, because tryouts are conducted to form teams.  Any player from North Carolina is welcome to participate in competitive tryouts scheduled in May at the Jordan Soccer Complex. During tryouts, players are evaluated by the Association’s Directors of Coaching and staff coaches. Tryouts typically consist of two 90-minute sessions on consecutive days. Players must attend both sessions.

Seasons and Training
Challenge-level teams play a fall and spring season. If chosen for a team, the player is expected to play BOTH the fall and spring seasons.  Most games are scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays. Teams play between 7-11 games per season. A team may also attend any number of tournaments during its season, both in and out of state.  The MSSL tournament is held in November of each year.

Players are required to attend a minimum of two 90-minute team training sessions a week and are encouraged to attend additional weekly skills sessions offered by the FSC.

Player Commitment
Development is accomplished through player and parent commitment to 2-3 days of training plus weekend matches and away tournaments.  Challenge coaches are encouraged to utilize all players in match competition based on player’s commitment level and player’s role on the team.  Once selected for a team, players are expected to fulfill their commitment to themselves, to their team and to FSC for the duration of the year.

Parental Commitment
A player’s commitment to Challenge-level soccer with FSC can only be accomplished with Parental Commitment. Parental Commitment is essential to ensure that the Mission and Goals of FSC Challenge division are met.  Parents are expected to fulfill their commitment to their son or daughter by:

  • Ensuring their preparation and attendance for all training and games
  • Providing positive reinforcement to all players, before, during, and after training sessions and games

Parents are expected to fulfill their commitment to FSC by:

  • Volunteering their time for FSC functions such as tournaments and ad hoc committees formed by FSC.
  • Supporting FSC’s fundraising efforts
  • Fulfilling financial obligations to FSC
  • Being positive representatives of FSC at all games and tournaments.
